How to bring the "Wow" to your Away Day

by Monica Stonehouse | Mar 14, 2024
Away days can be tricky at the best of times. How best to motivate your team and engage them in strategy without making the day drag on and feel like a chore? Conversely, how to bring an element of fun to your day without it turning into an all-day pub fest?

This week we hosted a murder mystery away day alongside our partners at the Westminster Venue Collection and it got us thinking of other great ways to turn away days into an interactive engaging and memorable day for your whole team. We came up with some suggestions that you can think about using on your next event:

Murder Mystery:

As mentioned above, this is a fantastic team building activity that gets everyone talking and working together to solve a crime. Huxley Events ran ours as a CSI style event where guests worked in two teams to try to solve the crime and they brought in all the props and tools to make it realistic and fun.  The best part is you can customise these sorts of activities to take up as much or as little time as you want in your day, so you don’t miss out on any essential agenda points.

Wine tasting.

Wine tasting:

Not sure what to do other than take your team to the pub? Why not try a wine tasting? Getting professionals in who will set up a tasting mat, glasses, and flight of wines while they talk you through what you’re drinking gives you a chance to enjoy a drink and perhaps learn something new.

Walking tour:

With the amount of sites and history London has to offer, even the most seasoned Londoners will learn something new on a tour of the area around your event venue. Have your tour guide meet you at the venue and spend an hour exploring the local area. This gives you all a break from sitting all day and gets you out in the sun (or rain!) for some fresh air and beautiful surroundings.

Cocktail making lesson:

Much like the wine tasting, this lets you drink while getting an education. Learn the tricks to a perfect tipple and have a great time doing it.

Arts and Crafts:

Discover a talent you never knew you had when you incorporate an art lesson into your away day. There are all sorts on offer from engraving to painting to crochet, and teachers willing to come to your event supplies in hand to show you how.

Put your team to work:

If your budget won’t allow you to splash out on a special aspect of your day, you can always get your delegates involved by setting them a task before the day. Having them prepare a presentation on something outside of work that interests them can help everyone get to know each other a little better and make them more confident contributing to the day. If anyone in your team has a special skill or talent, you could also get them to lead a class! Getting everyone involved in advance can set the tone for a productive and successful day.

We hope you feel inspired to branch out a bit on your next event or away day and if you’re looking for an ideal space to hold your event get in touch with our team would be more than happy to help.
